[Previous] - [Next]
Take off. Take-on, take-out, take-in. These are the phrasal-verbs that we are going to talk about in this video. Take-off to leave somewhere or to start moving. The airplane will take-off soon. When we talk about an airplane taking-off, it means leaving the runway and going into the sky to start flying. The airplane is going to take-off. He took-off when the police arrived. Here to take-off or past-tense, took-off. This-means-that he left very quickly. So he probably did something bad and when the police arrived, he ran-away. He took-off. With this new product, the business is finally starting to take-off. In this example, it's not really about movement, but it is about progress or success. The business is taking-off means the business is starting to be more successful. Take on. To accept a project or a challenge. I'm really busy. I've taken-on too-many projects at work. This-means-that right-now I have a lot of projects to work on because I have accepted too-many. She's ready to take-on the world. This means she's ready for any challenges that she might encounter. She's ready to do anything. She's not scared. She's not worried. She's confident. She's ready to take-on the world. The superhero took-on ten bad guys all by himself. Here again, took is the past-tense of take. So in this example, take-on means to fight. He took-on ten bad guys means he fought with ten bad guys. He accepted their challenge. Take-out. This can actually mean many things, but let's just look-at a few examples. I'd like to take you out for dinner. Here take-out means to take someone on a date. So if someone says I'd-like to take you out, that usually means I want you to go on a date with me. Take-out can also mean to kill or to destroy. For example, a drone strike took-out the building. And you can also take-out a loan from the bank. And finally, take-in. Today we are going to look-at two ways that you can use take-in. First, take-in can mean to understand something. Usually news or information about something important. Usually we just say that something is a lot to take-in. For example wow, this is a lot to take-in. This is a shock. I'm very surprised. I don't know what to say. This is a lot to take-in. Please give-me-a-moment. And take-in can also mean-that you allow someone into your home so-that you can take-care-of them. For example, the elderly couple took-in a young boy after his parents died. Or my mother is always taking-in new dogs that she finds on the street. So, yeah, these are some ways that you can use take-off, take-on, take-out and take-in. Thank you for watching. Please don't forget to click follow on facebook and subscribe on youtube.
